In Brief

The book series Deep Structure of Being are the first work reviewing the latest 20-plus years' experimental evidence in comparative studies on intraspecific adaptation, introducing a new developmental trend in biology, giving a systematic research on its historical background and the theoretical system. The book is a comprehensive work belonging to the category of life science, mainly relating to Evolutionary biology, Ecology, Physiology, Neuroscience and the research on biocomplexity.

The research on adaptation has long been based on interspecific comparative studies. However, since the second half of the 20th century, through intraspecific comparative studies, successively substantive phenomena have been found in the fringe of Ecology that changes of environmental factors give rise to intraspecific variations in organism?¡¥s characters or functions. For example, in response to environmental changes, seed size may be adjusted, the number of offspring may vary, breeding time may advance or delay, sizes of individuals may be diversified, the shape and behavior of individual may change, component phases of life history may be regulated, physiological and metabolic functions may be influenced, tissue and organ structures transformed, sex of offspring or sex ratio may be regulated etc..

Since the above-mentioned comparative studies on intraspecific adaptation have a common characteristic that they focus on reductionistic study on adaptation at the micro-physiology level, The book name this new direction as Neo-adaptationism formally. Neo-adaptationism breaks away from the modern evolutionary synthesis firstly which has discarded the gene-centered view of evolution, while shifting attention to phenotypic traits. Secondly, it uses the term "strategy" in its research on microcosmic adaptation. So the definition of neo-adaptationism is: The comparative study on the intraspecific adaptation of phenotypic physio-ecological strategy, based on microphysiological studies.

With substantial experimental evidence inconsistent with the views of evolutionary biology, intraspecific comparative studies have a strong impact on the traditional concepts of evolutionary biology, such as "adaptation", "genotypes", "phenotype" and so on. At the same time, large numbers of experimental evidence in intraspecific comparative studies have proved that functions of organisms are essentially variants of the common pattern. So, the experimental developments in intraspecific comparative study give a new connection between evolutionary biology and functional biology, which have been deeply divided theoretically, providing possibilities to explain adaptation at physiological level. In this way, grounded on physio-ecological explanation, a new perspective of adaptation comes into being. The new perspective based on a new explanation for the structures of being, reducing the biological adaptation to the combining phenotypic variations of the concrete components, forming structural relations among phenotypic variations. Thus, in intraspecific comparative studies, adaptability is reduced to a new analytic structure which is different from functional structure in functional biology. We call this new analytic structure theory "Deep structure biology".

Making a new synthesis associating intraspecific comparative study with Darwinian paradigm is a vital task for BECG's research project which aims at building the deep structure theory. This work has now successfully achieved the preconcerted target under the guidance of Lorenz thought of physiology. BECG's thematic work The Deep Structure of Being is centered on the issues.

It is a significative work that BECG extract and dig over Lorenz physiological thought. Based on a study of his physiological theory, BECG research team affirms that he is the founder of physiological Darwinism, and eventually establishes the basic reductive unit in the deep structure and deduces the deep structure theoretical system. BECG will discuss in detail the physiological Darwinism in the books The Deep Structure of Being, which including a study of Lorenz physiological thought, basic unit in the deep structure, deduction of deep structure theory's fundamentals, Lorenz physiological theory laying a foundation for the physiological Darwinism, associating neo-adaptationistic biology's experimental evidence with the deep structure theory.

The work to extract and dig over Lorenz physiological thought has shown that Lorenz theory of instinctive motor pattern has embedded a rudimentary concept of the basic unit of the deep structure. It just needs posterities to rediscover Lorenz as the later generation rediscovered Mendel. In Deep Structure of Being, readers will see how Lorenz went along with the substantive thinking and came to the direction of deep structure study after the neo-adaptationism breaking away from the strategy calculative school.

Deep Structure of Being consists of three volumes and is composed of 24 chapters, devoting to detailed discussions on three topics: Experimental Evidence in Intraspecies Comparison, The Characteristics of Neo-Adaptationism, and Deep Structure Biology.

Volume I includes 9 chapters, featuring the latest collections of experimental evidence in intraspecific comparative studies on adaptation, containing excerpts of the original papers and the references. These abundant experimental evidence for the first time systematically display a new research trend in biology--Comparative study on intraspecific adaptation.

Volume II includes 8 chapters, expounding the divergence and relatedness between neo-adaptationism and the other two major branches of biology--Evolutionary biology and Functional biology, by tracing back the developmental history of biology. This book is in fact a brief history of theoretical biology, systematically giving readers a thorough grasp of the basic biological problems and the significance of the neo-adaptationism.

Volume III includes 7 chapters, presenting a new synthesis combining the intraspecies comparative study with paradigm of Darwinism. This synthesis introduces the basic unit of deep biological structure and illustrates what is the design basis for the deep structure in explaining regulating mechanisms. The new synthesis builds a new bridge between the paradigm of Darwinism and Microphysiology. Based on the synthesis, BECG suggest a way to modify the current experimental systems of functional biology.

These new integrated theory and experimental methods are very practical and concrete, having maneuverability and application value for experimental biology. It also creates a new analytical frame for research in disciplines like Neuroinformatics, Genome informatics etc.. This approach is so universal that experimenters can quickly combine the theory and methods with their research works.

In addition, the books for the first time compare the differences between neo-adaptationism and biocomplexity theories in aspects of research methods and demonstration basis, explicitly suggesting the causation of biocomplexity is the deep structure. So, biocomplexity can be completely deciphered by using neo-reductionistic methods. This work will draw more biologists' attention to the neo-adaptationism and the theory deep structure of being. It will be very helpful to reestablish effective reductionistic methods to functional biology.

References of The books are from research papers, publications, most of them were originally published over the past 20 years. Due to the fact that BECG have not found any reviews and treatises summarizing the thoughts of neo-adaptationism, the books are only referenced by the papers and books which represent or demonstrate one separated branches of neo-adaptationism. Some important scholars' neo-adaptationistic thinking was extracted and refined by the authors over the past 10 years.

The coming year 2009 is the year for Darwinian. By summing up and developing neo-adaptationism, the books will give a mannerly retortion to the thoughts depreciating and discrediting Darwinism that exist in circles of natural science and biological science.
